Over the past 3 years as part of the 400 year anniversary programme of the Mayflower ship leaving Southampton for the New World, Mayflower Theatre has commissioned two new musicals and a dance production to be performed on the Mayflower Theatre stage in August 2020. Due to COVID-19 these productions have not been able to take place but the theatre have still offered 4 groups of young people the opportunity to explore the new musicals in their Mayflower 400 Summer Workshops held at Mayflower Theatre from July 27 – August 7.
Compass Music and Lyrics by Stephanie Jayne Amies, Additional music and arrangements by Teddy Clements and Book by Stephanie Jayne Amies and Dinos Aristidou.
Hourglass Music by Rebecca Applin, Book by Rebecca Applin and Susannah Pearse, Lyrics by Susannah Pearse.
The workshop participants and the general public have also had the opportunity to take part in the Online Mayflower Choral project. Mayflower Theatre invited people to make home recordings of 4 of the songs from the musicals and these have been made into short music videos featuring the young people who took part in the workshops.
Mayflower Theatre are also delighted to be holding a Heritage Open Day on September 12; sharing the music videos from these projects, the heritage of our wonderful building and also partnering with Southampton Heritage Federation to exhibit artefacts from their many local groups.
Full details of the Heritage Open Day will be available soon.
